Bulgaria is one of the few countries in the world where soil cover has been studied and mapped in detail across almost the entire national territory. In addition to the national soil map, the country has established several specialised registers focused on soil quality and suitability for different types of agriculture. These include the register of degraded (damaged) soils, an erosion map, a small-scale soil map of the country, a database of soils at the sites of the Level I national monitoring network, the national soil archive, the soil quality register, and numerous studies of soil profiles, as well as targeted surveys and partial mappings for specific purposes.
